Friday was a long travel day, starting with a 4:20 a.m. wake up. I considered trying to squeeze in a workout of some sort when I finally got to Little Rock, but I just didn’t have it in me. I counted it as a rest day, and headed into the weekend.
Little Rock is dealing with the after effects of Hurricane Isaac, so training potential for Saturday and Sunday were a little questionable. I started Saturday morning with an endurance swim at the indoor pool, which worked out well. There were still a lot of low, threatening clouds, so indoor was better than out at that point. The workout was a 5 X 100 yard warmup, followed by a 2000 yard main set. After a week in the hotel “kiddie pool”, it was good to get back into the full sized one and swim without worrying about conking my head at the end of each lap!
The clouds broke up well in the afternoon, and I got out the road bike for a 20 mile ride. It was good to get back on the local roads with almost no traffic (at least compared to Tampa). I kept a solid 19+ mph pace for most of the ride, except for the really steep hills that break up all of my local routes. Even the hills felt good, though, after a week of stationary exercise bikes in hotel gyms.
Isaac seemed reluctant to leave, and very nearly “rained on my parade” toward the end of the ride. I was about 4 miles from home when the winds suddenly kicked up and the temperature dropped 5-10 degrees. Not good. I got hit with the occasional big raindrop as I pushed up the speed to get back to the house. The closer I got, the wetter the roads became. It started raining pretty steadily as I climbed the last hill into the driveway. Dodged another soaking ride.
This morning was a long run along the river trail. Only 7 miles, but longer than I’ve been doing for the summer in prep for the triathlon. Hard to believe that just 6 months ago 7 miles was half the length of my SHORTEST long run in the marathon program. The Plantar Fasciitis and triathlon training took care of that. I’m planning to work my way back up to 10 miles or so every other week, just to provide the flexibility to jump into a half marathon program if I decide to. The half marathon seems to be my niche as far as running is concerned, and I think I’d like to do one this fall or early spring. We’ll see how much time I have.
Tomorrow is Labor Day, so I have the day off. I’m planning on a 30 mile ride early in the morning, followed by another long day of finishing my MBA case study (due tomorrow night). The indoor pool is closed, so no swim. Looks like I’ll save that for Tuesday morning.
